WATCH: The Second All-Female Spacewalk

Astronauts and Heroes Jessica Meir and Christina Koch Do It Again with the Second All-Female Spacewalk.

This morning, despite a slight helmet issue, Jessica Meir and Christina Koch completed their second spacewalk together. Oh yeah… and that makes it the second all-female spacewalk ever, too. Last fall, the pair of ISS astronauts stepped out into the vacuum of space for the first time together and made history. Today’s mission was similar in nature and scope. And, despite an issue with Koch’s helmet, the pair pulled it off successfully.

Fortunately, the helmet issue wasn’t a serious threat to the mission. In fact, it was really more of a camera malfunction. After only about a half-hour, the camera system on Koch’s helmet came loose. Unfortunately, the camera system also provides light for the mission. As such, Koch tried to re-attach the system. However, mission control advised her not to waste the time and to stow the gear instead. The astronauts asked if the lack of lighting for Koch would affect the mission. However, Mission Control told them to carry on with caution.

Meir and Koch were tasked with replacing old nickel-hydrogen batteries on the station’s port-truss 6 with newer lithium-ion ones. The new batteries store energy from the solar arrays on the truss.

Watch The Mission:

Today’s mission started just before 7:00 am EST and lasted until just after 2:00 pm. Despite the dangers of spacewalks, or EVAs, as they’re sometimes called, Koch and Meir have both done more than their fair share of them. While this was only the second all-female spacewalk, it’s the sixth spacewalk for Koch and the third for Meir.

Additionally, Koch has been in space for over 300 days. She got to the ISS in March and is nearing the end of her yearlong mission. Meir, on the other hand, arrived in October and is scheduled to be on the ISS for six months.
