Today the First Atlas V Launches Under the U.S. Space Force Banner. Watch Now!

I know I’ve made a thing of it quite a bit on this site, but one can’t hear a whisper in a hurricane. So it goes with the Space Force, which is a division of the U.S. Air Force Space Command (which has been around nearly as long as the Air Force). That said, today, the U.S. Space Force launched its first Atlas V rocket on a national security mission. Liftoff is happening as I type this from Cape Canaveral, FL. 

The Atlas V, manufactured by United Launch Alliance, carries a new generation of military communications satellite with it.

 In a statement, ULA VP Gary Wentz said, “IN the current dynamic environment, national security is of utmost importance.” He continued, “We are proud to launch the first National Security Space mission for the U.S. Space Force and look forward to delivering the final AEHF asset to support our nation’s national defense and warfighter community.” 

What about COVID-19?

The Department of Defense decided to go ahead with today’s launch even though many other space agencies around the world have grounded launches. When asked about the timing of today’s launch, given the outbreak of COVID-19 and safety measures surrounding it, officials said that this mission was critical to national security. As such, the Air Force, or Space Force if you prefer, deemed that the launch should continue. ULA originally scheduled the launch for 2:58 pm EDT today, but they held off until the end of their two-hour window to launch.
