Watch Blue Origin Launch a New Shepard Rocket (Video)

After Weather Delays Yesterday, Blue Origin Gets Its New Shepard Rocket Off The Ground.

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin has been reaching for the stars longer than SpaceX has. Yet, SpaceX gets most of the press when it comes to new development in commercial spaceflight. Meanwhile, Blue Origin and others work more quietly in the background designing the next generation of stellar exploratory vessels like the company’s New Shepard rocket system. Quietly, that is, until days like today.

Today Bezos and co. launched their New Shepard rocket more than 60 miles into the atmosphere—right to the edge of space. Then the capsule detached and the rocket made a perfect landing back at the launch site. This particular rocket has made similar flights and landings six times now. Re-usability, according to nearly everyone in the industry, is the key to bringing spaceflight costs down and opening up space tourism.

Here’s the Launch Video:

Though this particular New Shepard Mission didn’t have a crew, it did have important cargo on board. One such payload was an experiment designed by NASA called OSCAR will test gasses that may further NASA’s understanding of how to recycle common waste into “propulsion or life support.” University and commercial experiments also made it onto the New Shepard capsule.

Unlike SpaceX, which has been delivering cargo to the ISS for NASA and other agencies for some time now, Blue Origin seems less interested in those types of missions. Their real focus, it seems is on putting people—particularly tourists—into space. Officials at Blue Origin say they hope to start crewed commercial missions in 2020, and that tickets run between $200,000 and $250,000 per seat. They already have 600 reservations.
