Looking for Some Cosmological Terror? We’ve Got the Five Scary Space Movies to Take Your Halloween into the Void and Beyond!

Today we celebrate all things that are wonderfully spooky! Halloween brings joy to millions each year. And for many of those millions, a creepy or terrifying horror movie (or several) tonight is an absolute must. As such, a plethora of movies exist from which to choose. But what if you’re tired of watching Freddy Krueger slash through people’s nightmares? Or what if you’ve seen Get Out one too many times? What if… you want something otherworldly? Fear not (pun intended). We’ve got five scary space movies that are absolute classics for your Halloween festivities.

1. Alien

If this weren’t at the top of the list, I suspect I’d be fired, shot, or both. James Cameron’s classic space horror epic keeps you in suspense from beginning to end. Opinions vary about which movie in the franchise is best, and many will argue that Aliens is superior, but for suspense, this is the one.

2. Event Horizon

Event Horizon may not be the best horror movie ever, or the best space movie ever, but it’s certainly one of the best of both that the 1990s produced. Also, Amazon Prime is reimagining the concept as a streaming series soon. So it’s a good idea to watch the original movie and compare notes. Plus, Sam Neill.

3. Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Close Encounters thrilled and terrified audiences back in 1977. It’s mentioned as a cultural icon by Congress alongside Star Wars for crying out loud. Many also credit Speilberg’s grand vision with re-igniting a passion for UFO-related events. As for the horror aspect, that depends on the viewer, I guess. If you think the idea of being abducted by aliens is terrifying, then you’ll probably be scared.

4. 2001: A Space Odyssey

Kubrick’s masterpiece (in my opinion) is about as terrifying as it gets. Though it definitely moves very slowly. There are no ax murderers. Nary an alien in sight(?) No monster or ghoul haunts our protagonist here. Just an insane artificial intelligence named Hal 9000. If you haven’t seen this one yet, do it. However, do it late, because it will zap the energy from the room.

5. Predators

Okay, so I know that none of the movies I’ve chosen so far have been produced this century. That’s why for number five I went with Predators (2010), not Predator (1987). That first Predator movie was so badass. I don’t know if I’d really classify it as horror, but definitely action-horror. This one, on the other hand, plays just like a horror flick. It’s suspenseful, violent, gory, and dark. Definitely worth a watch!
