SpaceX Top Brass Has Harsh Words for Competitors

SpaceX President and COO Claims There’s No Real Competition When It Comes to Falcon 9, Starlink, and Starship.

Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX President and COO, fired proverbial shots at the competition over the past couple of weeks. In fact, whether meeting with investors or publically commenting on Twitter, Shotwell hasn’t been silent. And she’s got harsh words for the likes of Blue Origin, Lockheed-Martin, and her other competitors.

Starlink

SpaceX’s ginormous communications-satellite constellation already has sixty satellites in orbit, and by next year, they could have up to 1500 satellites ready to provide next-generation internet service to customers. On the other hand, Shotwell points out that their biggest competitors, Amazon and OneWeb, have only just started hiring for their planned constellations. In that case, according to her, that indicates they’re years behind in this particular race.

Going to the Stars

As for putting people and cargo into orbit, Shotwell’s gloating there, too. Speaking of her competitors, she said they “like their cushy situation.” She then touted Musk’s drive and ambitious goal-setting. “I don’t think there’s a motivation or a drive there,” Shotwell said of companies like Blue Origin, Boeing, and the like. She continued, “engineers think better when they’re pushed hardest to do great things in a very short period of time, with very few resources. Not when you have twenty years.”

And she may have a point, given the success SpaceX has seen lately. However, let’s also not forget that SpaceX and other Musk-run companies are famous for placing harsh demands on their employees. On the other hand, if what Shotwell claims about Starship is true, SpaceX will beat NASA back to the moon. That’s no small feat, and certainly reason to brag—even if it is on the backs of your over-worked scientists.
