SpaceX Starship, The Company’s Next Big Thing, Suffers a Massive Failure

Elon Musk has big plans for Starship, the SpaceX craft that is set to be the first “Mars-voyage-ready” vehicle. Unfortunately, Tuesday night one of the Starship’s prototype rockets, the Starhopper, suffered a failure. Not a minor failure, either. Nope, we’re talking the type of failure that ends in a big boom.

SpaceX makes more headlines currently than their main competitor, Boeing. Both aerospace giants, the powerful new upstart and the grizzled old veteran — if you will, are working very hard on contracts for NASA. NASA eschewed its own Space Shuttle program years ago in favor of commercially made, reusable rockets. SpaceX has two operational systems already, the Falcon 9, and Falcon Heavy. Both systems proved themselves by successfully delivered payloads to the ISS and back.

The Starship is not a part of the Falcon program, however, and today’s testing was part of a series of planned “hops” for this month. We covered successful Falcon launches a few months ago, but the Starship program has received less press. Musk says the Starship program for his ultimate goal of making humanity a “multi-planetary species.” He also said he planned to host an event presenting the project to supporters “a few weeks” after these tests were completed.

Bouncing Back

It’s hard to say what this particular failure means at this point. The news is breaking and we don’t yet know what caused the failure. It wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine this causing delays in Musk’s unveiling plans. Then again, the company bounces back from incidents like this one fairly well. We’ll keep you posted.

Really ? It’s Elon Musk, not Jeff Bezoz, that does not sound very comforting for the rest of the news
