Japanese Billionaire and SpaceX Customer Maezawa Yusaku is Looking for Love (In all the Odd Places)

This is just too good to leave alone. Maezawa Yusaku (I type it the Japanese way—family name first; deal with it) is widely known for being the first SpaceX customer to purchase a ticket on Starship. Maezawa’s trip will take him around the moon in 2023 if all goes as planned. Also, if the flamboyant Japanese billionaire gets his way, he’ll bring a special lady friend into the stars with him. But wait. It gets even better. He doesn’t have anyone in mind for the trip yet. So he plans to find someone on a brand new reality TV series. I wish I could make this up.

Maezawa (44) made his bank by selling his online fashion retailer, Zozo inc, to Softbank Group Corp. He’s known for being a bit of an attention-seeker, you might say, and this latest stunt is not completely out of character. The show will feature females over 20 years old (’cause, you know, a 44-year-old looking for someone twenty-five years younger than him would just be creepy, so 19 is definitely out). It will also air on a streaming service called AbemaTV.

Looking For Love

In a message to his potential suitors, he wrote, “As feelings of loneliness and emptiness slowly begin to surge upon me, there’s one thing that I think about: continuing to love one woman.”  He continued, “I want to find a ‘life partner.’ With that future partner of mine, I want to shout our love and world peace from outer space.”

This probably has nothing to do with the fact that Maezawa recently broke up with his girlfriend, actress Goriki Ayame (27). In fact, Maezawa also wants to take some artists up with him to create works inspired by the experience. He calls that project Dear Moon.

Full Moon Lovers

The documentary, titled “Full Moon Lovers” is set to stream on AbemaTV, a service backed by CyberAgent and TV Asahi. Applications for the show close this Friday, January 17th, so if you’re interested, you’d better get on it. Applicants, of course, need to be willing and able to go to space, so there’s that aspect as well. The show is scheduled to conclude by the end of March.
