SpaceSpeak: Send A Text Message to Outer Space?

Share

Ever Wanted to Rant at the Aliens? Well, SpaceSpeak Gives You That Opportunity for Free… Sort Of.

There are all kinds of ways to achieve immortality. Okay, maybe not in the way you’re thinking, but if you want to ensure that your impact on this world never fades from memory, you have a few options. If for example, you’re the President, the King or Queen, people will remember you forever. Similarly, if you’re a member of the Beatles or Marlon Brando, people will probably remember you forever. Until recently, however, the mass of us “normal folk” had to rely on some sort of gravestone, urn, or memorial in order to commemorate our time on Earth. Now, though, there are plenty of ways to immortalize yourself. From time-capsules and geocaching to the naming a star after yourself, opportunities abound, and SpaceSpeak is one of those newer opportunities.

What Is This SpaceSpeak? And What’s It Doing on Space Porn?

According to their website, SpaceSpeak is a service that transmits messages for private individuals into the cosmos. That’s right. You can send a text to outer space for free, where it will travel (in theory) for billions of years, to the edges of the cosmos. Unless, of course, an alien with an iPhone picks receives it first.

Why Are You Advertising A Possible Scam?

I know, on the surface, it seems a little dicey, but the science is sound. SpaceSpeak claims to take your message and use a powerful microwave radio transmitter to encode that message and send it into space. People do this all the time. It’s how we communicate with satellites. And we know that radio waves propagate across the cosmos – in fact, much of what we know about the cosmos came to us by way of studying those radio waves. So if they do what they say they’ll do—especially for a free text message—no harm, no foul.

Here’s the thing, though. SpaceSpeak is a private company, and we’ve not been paid by them or even contacted by them about this piece. We’re not endorsing their reputability or anything of the sort. Per the company’s website, you can send a text message for free, an image or audio file for a buck-fifty, and a whole 24-hour broadcast for five bucks. Again, we at Space Porn aren’t necessarily endorsing this service, but even if it is a waste of money, it’s not a super-expensive waste (unless you really want to broadcast every day). Plus the idea of sending a text to outer space is kind of fun. Also, if nothing else, read the FAQ page. It’s brilliant.
