LEGO Releasing an International Space Station Model on February 1st!
Calling all Space Nerds!
Oh, I’m sorry… Look, if you’re reading a site called Space Porn and you don’t consider yourself a Space Nerd, you’re deluding yourself. You may as well go all-in and get a Space Porn Hoodie. But I digress. I’m betting a number of you already have a LEGO model or two. Maybe you’ve got a LEGO Millenium Falcon or a LEGO Slave 1. And if you don’t, I’m betting you’ll want one now. I know I do. Of course, you could also wait a few more days and get your very own LEGO ISS model!
If you check out LEGO’s “Space” interests page, you’ll find models for nearly every ship in the Star Wars and Marvel universes. You’ll also find some real-life spacecraft and some more realistic ones. For example, LEGO makes models of the Apollo 11 lander, a rocket assembly and transport, a deep space launch and control center, a lunar space station, a Mars research shuttle, a satellite service mission, and more. So it’s not unprecedented for the popular toy brand to make a model like this.
Commemorating Two Decades of Human Space Presence
The ISS launched in 1998 and has had a human crew maintaining it since November 2nd, 2000. That means nearly everyone born in this century has lived in a world where humans constantly orbit the Earth in space. During those two decades, ISS crews performed countless experiments to further humanity’s understanding of our universe. Astronauts from all over the world have made the station work, and have seen the Earth in a way that only a handful of people ever have. As such, the ISS stands (er… floats?) as a symbol for human curiosity, cooperation, and achievement. And LEGO commemorates that achievement with the new LEGO ISS model.
Most people—”non” space nerds, I mean—think of LEGOs as kids’ toys. Look a little deeper, though, and you’ll see that plenty of adults use the building block sets in their hobbies. Building LEGO sets can help reduce stress. Besides, LEGO sets make pretty bitchin’ decorations, if you ask me.
