Space Entertainment: What to Watch This Weekend?

Share

Most of Us Are Still Under Some Sort of Stay-Home Order or Advisory. Never Fear: We’ve Got Space Entertainment Options for you. Here’s What I’ll Be Watching This Weekend…

You may have noticed a slight shift in Space Porn content lately toward space entertainment articles. That’s because we’re, most of us, cooped up at home and want to escape the reality that’s bombarding our screens most of the time. With that in mind, here are some great ideas to take you out of this world…

1. Ad Astra

I did a couple of reviews of the trailer for this movie before it was released, but sadly, I never got around to watching it. It’s available for purchase or rental on Amazon Prime and other streaming rental services like YouTube and AppleTV.

Here’s the trailer, and why I’m willing to shell out some money to watch it…

First, this looks to be a high concept sci-fi flick with plenty of action. Second, Brad Pitt. Finally, it’s got an 80 on Metacritic, so I’m fairly sure it’ll be worth the $4 to rent it on Prime. Of course, because I haven’t seen it yet, I can’t necessarily recommend you watch it, but I’ll let you know once I’m finished.

2. The Martian

I bought this one when it first came out because I read Andy Weir’s novel first. It’s slightly cheaper to rent on Prime if you haven’t seen it yet. Or, you know, if you just want to watch it again, like me.

Here’s the trailer:

If you’re unfamiliar with the story or the premise, let me give you a bit to wet your appetite.

Matt Damon’s character, Mark Watney, is part of one of the first expeditions on Mars. During a routine EVA outing, Watney’s team encounters a violent sandstorm and Watney is knocked unconscious with a hole in his suit. The rest of the team get no life readings, and for their own safety, they abort the mission and leave the planet.

Watney’s not dead, though. Now he has to MacGyver everything in order to survive for nearly four years until help can arrive. Yeah… It’s freakin’ awesome! Worth a $3 rental all day long if you’ve got the money. If not, unfortunately none of the major streaming services are carrying it except Hulu+Live TV (their most expensive package).

3. Interstellar

This is another one that I haven’t seen yet. I know, I know. You’re all yelling at your screens right now. Calm down. It’s not because I don’t like Christopher Nolan and I don’t think it looks good. I just have an aversion to McConaughey, that’s all.

Yep, it’s a stupid reason to miss out on what many people have told me is some fine space entertainment. So this weekend I’ll bite the bullet and watch it.

Again, because I haven’t seen it, I can’t comment too much on it yet, but I’ll let you know when I do.

Here’s the Trailer:

4. Evolution

This is a comedy I haven’t seen in a couple of decades. Now it’s back on the Netflix machine, and I’m gonna give it another whirl this weekend. It stars David Duchovny and Julianne Moore. On the heels of a bazillion seasons of playing the lovable but stoic Fox Mulder on The X-Files, Duchovny wanted to branch out with a comedy. I remember him remarking on a late night talk show at the time that he was a bit disappointed that the comedy his agent picked for him happened to be all about aliens.

Here’s the trailer:

As you can see, it’s also got Sean William Scott and Orlando Jones, so it’s pretty much guaranteed to make me laugh. I remember thinking it was a fun movie when I saw it twenty years ago. We’ll see if it still holds up with today’s standards for space entertainment.

5. District 9

Okay, so nothing happens in space in this movie, really, but it is about aliens and it’s got a lot of great social commentary, which makes it worth watching again. This is another movie I’ve only seen once. I watched it in the theater and really liked it because of the social commentary and the alien character. Plus, it has a higher Metacritic score than Ad Astra, so I’m guessing I’ll like it just as much the second time around.

Here’s the trailer:

It’s gritty, fast paced, and has a lot to say. And it’s still available to stream for free with a Prime subscription for another two weeks.
