Netflix’s Space Force Trailer Gives A Better Look at the New Comedy

Steve Carell and Greg Daniels Are Clearly In Top Form Again, And Netflix’s Space Force drops on May 29th!

We’ve known about Netflix’s Space Force sitcom for a while now. However, until now, Netflix hasn’t been exactly forthcoming with the details. We saw a every short teaser that showed nearly nothing. IMDb told us that Steve Carell and Greg Daniels were involved, which conjured all kinds of conjecture about how this new Space Force comedy series was going to be the next The Office

Now, however, we have a proper trailer to watch. And I have to say that after seeing it, I’m more excited than ever about this show. In one of the last reports we did on the show, we mentioned that Lisa Kudrow and John Malkovich were on board. Now, we can see that Jayne Lynch and Fred Willard round out a fantastic cast as well. We also get some idea of the type of humor we can expect.

Clearly Carell’s character isn’t exactly Michael Scott, but he’s clearly over his head. And when Steve Carell plays a character over his head, that’s usually pretty fertile ground for comedy truffles.

Well, See for yourself. Here’s the Trailer for Netflix’s Space Force

So there are a few things to like right off the bat.

First, I like that we’re not getting a “mock” reality show like The Office. Now calm down. Calm down. While it’s true, I never really got into The Office. But that’s because for me it was the same reason nurses don’t watch medical shows and cops don’t watch cop shows. I worked in an insurance company at the time, and wasn’t interested in spending time in front of the TV watching people doing what I’d just done all day. Even if they were pointing out EVERYTHING that was ridiculous about it.

All that said, I’ve since come to enjoy the show quite a bit. But that’s just it. We already had The Office. In fact, we had two. Much love, Ricky Gervais. I don’t think I’m out of line by saying we don’t need another.

And thankfully, it doesn’t look like that’s what we’re getting. Instead, it looks like we’re getting a show with the wit of the office, but that moves like Veep, or even The West Wing.

Sticking with Satire

I also love that it looks like Daniels and Carell are doing to the federal government (especially the military-industrial complex) exactly what they did to the corporate world with The Office. In Netflix’s Space Force, I expect to see them lampoon EVERYTHING that is ridiculous about that world. We already saw a couple of digs in the trailer. “…Scientists, you have a loyalty to reason,” Carell says, “…makes you a little untrustworthy.” was particularly funny to me. As was the failed test that cost as much as “four middle schools.”

Netflix’s Space Force premiers on May 29th. Here’s hoping it’s not nearly accurate.
