The Super Guppy Brings the Artemis 1 Mission Spacecraft to Final Testing Grounds

One certainly understands why NASA’s giant transport aircraft is named after a fish. Beyond that, though, the bulbous Super Guppy manages to be both retro and futuristic at the same time. It’s about one of the coolest looking things I’ve ever seen. And on Sunday, the Super Guppy delivered Orion, the spacecraft designed for NASA’s Artemis 1 mission to Ohio for the final phase of testing.

The Super Guppy landed at Mansfield Lahm Regional Airport, about halfway between Cleveland and Columbus. However, its cargo will head for the Plum Brook Station, a NASA testing facility in Sandusky, Ohio, just west of Cleveland. After that, it’ll undergo a battery of tests and be ready to hop aboard its rocket.

Given that NASA has four fewer years to get the first woman and the next man onto the lunar surface, their impatience is understandable – especially when commercial options are more viable both economically and chronologically.
