NASA Remix of Ariana Grande Song Inspires Young Women in Science

A Bunch of Interns at NASA—More Than a Dozen—Remix Ariana Grande’s “NASA” to Promote Artemis and Missions Beyond

I know. This is Space Porn. Not “TRL,” “Yo MTV Raps,” or whatever the hell you kids are watching on the YouTubes these days. Regardless, we’re going to be talking about Ariana Grande. Or rather, we’re going to be discussing a remix of her song “NASA,” by a whole lot of dedicated interns at NASA. An article in GMA outlines the reasons behind the video. However, before we get into why this NASA remix is remarkable, you should just watch it first.

There’s a Lot to Love There if You’re Trying to Inspire Kids

First of all, the fact that they’re remixing an Ariana Grande song, and that the leads are all female is fantastic. Those young women are helping to show an entire generation of women younger than them that it’s not only okay but necessary for them to be rocket scientists. Humanity is simply facing too many existential crises to continue ostracising—in any capacity—over half of the planet. To imply that one can’t or shouldn’t do science as a career because of one’s gender is simply assinine. No. I want all hands on deck when it comes to getting us back on track to stabilize climate change, getting us to the Moon again, then Mars, and helping solve terrestrial problems like water shortage.

Sure, it’s not my cup of tea musically, nor even as an entertaining video to watch. But I’m a 41-year-old man who writes about space for a living, not a 14-year-old young woman sitting in a science classroom. That young woman might go to class every day with the implication that she doesn’t have to pay attention because “girls don’t do science.”

I say a pox upon any person spouting such ridiculousness. I want every young woman and man in America paying attention in science class. We need the whole of our intellectual forces to slay these dragons before us. And if it helps to re-mix Ariana Grande, then I’m all for it. Get out there and do some science, young ladies! Please… All of our lives depend on it.
