If Stellar Beauty Restores Your Soul—Let the View of Venus and the Pleiades Wow You Tonight!

Most of you know Orion, the constellation. Fewer but still many know the legend behind the constellation. If you’re one those, then you know that Orion, the hunter, isn’t after any typical quarry. For ages, he’s been hunting the seven sisters, the star cluster we know as the Pleiades. Those stars, not ultra-bright, yet fascinating to see with the naked eye on a clear night, can take your breath away. Tonight, however, they’ve got a protector from Orion, their hunter. Venus, goddess of love, the planet that burns with the fires of a thousand furnaces, will converge with the Pleiades tonight. In fact, Venus and the Pleiades converge once every eight years.

Because that legend is so cool, here’s a really quick video explanation:

Ordinarily, a person with average vision can see six of the seven sisters in the Pleiades with the naked eye. In centuries past, however, the star cluster was used as a vision test for military scouts. If you could see seven stars, you had excellent vision and were perfect for scouting. Tonight, however, even the most eagle-eyed scouts won’t be able to see the Pleiades with the naked eye.

That’s because tonight, Venus and the Pleiades converge. Venus steps in once again and uses her light to protect the seven sisters from their relentless pursuer. If you look up at the western sky soon after sunset, you won’t be able to miss Venus. She’s the brightest light in that direction (assuming you’re not in a crowded city). Because she shines so bright, and so much closer than the 400-light-year-away Pleiades cluster, she’ll outshine them with the naked eye. If, however, you happen to have even a modest set of binoculars, though, you should be able to see the sisters hiding from Orion behind Venus’ beautiful glow.

You have to admit, even though most of us can’t go out be social this Friday night, a show like this makes the situation a little more bearable. Enjoy!
