Suits All Sorted, Schedules Aligned, Astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir Made History Today With the First All-Female Spacewalk!

First, congratulations. Mrs. Koch, Ms. Meir, you’re an inspiration to not only every young girl who likes science in America but to a lot of the rest of us as well – even if we are 41-year-old dudes. Second, this thing – the first all-female spacewalk in history – is still going on, so please, for the love of all goodness, be careful, ladies.

Another Leap for (Hu)mankind

It’s not that a woman hasn’t done an EVA before. In fact, both Koch and Meir have done them on this mission. But they’ve never done one together. Symbolic though this first all-female spacewalk might sound, it’s actually a huge victory for gender equality. And it sends a powerful message to young women everywhere—Math, science, engineering, and even space flight are not just boys’ clubs anymore.

Of course, we’ve still got a long way to go in order to close the gender gap, but moments like this are what’s going to make that happen. They’re inspiring. And the more young women go into the field, the more the field is going to advance and grow.

Interviewed recently, Koch said, “In the end, I do think it’s important, and I think it’s important because of the historical nature of what we’re doing.

“In the past, women haven’t always been at the table,” she continued. “It’s wonderful to be contributing to the space program at a time when all contributions are being accepted, when everyone has a role. That can lead in turn to increased chance for success. There are a lot of people who derive motivation from inspiring stories of people who look like them, and I think it’s an important story to tell.”

The Mission:

The mission is set to last about five or six hours. It began around 7:50 am (EDT). The primary focus of the mission is to replace a faulty battery charge/discharge unit.
