Bezos’ & Co’s Streaming Service to Revive the Sci-Fi Classic with an Event Horizon Series

A new generation of space and sci-fi fans will get a fresh look at a great space flick soon, according to Variety. Paramount Television and Amazon Prime have teamed up to create an Event Horizon series. The original film, released in 1997, was a sci-fi horror movie starring Lawrence Fishburne and Sam Neil. Though the movie only has a rating of 6.7/10 on IMDb, it does have a lot going for it.

While it’s true that the movie rips off better movies quite a bit (Alien, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Hellraiser, to name a few), and it has a lot of the same anachronisms that sci-fi movies of that era had (CD-ROM technology, paper photos, etc), if you can get past those, it’s actually a visually compelling movie, and the story has potential.

Details Are Still Sketchy About The Event Horizon Series.

The deal to make the series has only just come to light, so there aren’t a lot of details available yet. Nevertheless, here’s what we do know. The original cast of the movie is not likely to return. In fact, nobody’s even sure if the Event Horizon series will even follow the same plot as the movie. Adam Wingard will direct, coming off of recent success with the Blair Witch remake, along with what we’re all hoping will be an excellent Godzilla Vs. Kong remake which will be out next year. Producers of the series include Larry Gordon, Lloyd Levin, and Jeremy Platt. Gordon and Levin both produced the film adaptation, so there’s a chance there will be some connection between the movie and the series.

If you’re unfamiliar with the plot from the movie, it revolves around a ship called the Event Horizon that went missing. The ship ran on a gravity drive that created an artificial black hole, allowing for instantaneous transportation across the universe. The crew that goes to rescue the Event Horizon find themselves in another dimension. One in which a malevolent force subjects them to unspeakable horrors. As I said, it has potential. Here’s hoping the Event Horizon series will outshine the movie, and that it lives up to the quality of other streaming shows we love.
