Epic Space: Online – A Review of 2018!

Share

2018 was a very interesting year for us over at Epic Space: Online.

Annnnndddd bullshit aside, we’re very excited about 2019.

In case you weren’t already aware, we’ve released a number of updates to the core game and received quite a bit of feedback through the in game feedback interface and the new bug tracker. So I wanted to spend a few moments re-introducing it to the community.

The Epic Space: Online in game feedback system

Accessible from the PDA. Players can submit direct feedback to the development team at any time. We’re absolutely on the hunt for bugs and new ideas. So feel free to use this to communicate with us directly.

In the same interface is our Gitlog. All changes not related to security will be listed here for all pilots to check out.

This interface does two things:

  • Receives feedback from the player base
  • and showcases our GitLog.

Every time we have a major update, we’ll have those change notes posted right here. As well as on our Official Discord Channel. Of course, some changes related to security won’t be posted, we’ll do our best to keep this list comprehensive and easy to sift through.

Bug Tracker

We receive bug reports a number of ways. Through the in game feedback system, Steam Forums, Epic Space: Forums, and the Discord #Help channel.

We’ve added an additional way to receive and track bugs with the community. When we receive a potential bug report, and it just so happens to be new, we’ll list it here. Then begin steps to replicate and squash.

You can help us track and resolve bugs by giving us your input on the Bug Tracker Trello board here: https://trello.com/b/eBNTWpAv/bug-tracker-epic-space-online

Ooooo mamma. New Ship: The Artemis Interceptor

This year, we announced and launched our first interceptor, “The Artemis”. It is an interceptor class fighter designed for speed, agility, and badassery. With its introduction, we’ve also developed the landing strut mechanic and vertical flight/strafing systems. These systems allow players to control their ships much more easily when landing on asteroid bases and space stations.

Base Ship Stats

Base Speed: 1000 m/s
Acceleration: Very Fast
Hull: 100 HP
Turrets: 1
Max Retrofits: 1
Ship Ability: TBA
Founder Ship: Yes (Learn More)

Crafting Details (Requires Ship Building Level 3)

x80 Titanium Ingots x80 Alumina x20 Small Electrical Kits x5 Life Support Components

The Artemis can equip all modules that aren’t limited to a cargo ship (such as the Large Cargo Container), such as:

  • Mining Equipment
  • Scanning Equipment
  • Improved Thrusters
  • Cargo bay Expanders

This is also a Founder ship, which means founders receive a free copy. (More info on Founder Ships, and check if you’re a founder)

Gameplay changes

Along with the Artemis, new features have been implemented in support of this new type of ship including:

  • Deployable Landing Struts
  • Vertical Strafing
  • Changes to Crafting

With the feedback received over the last few months, we’ll implement some of these features, including landing struts to the main starter ship: The Apollo.

Trade Agreements

Trade agreements allow a friendly way for players to have contracts with others. Depending on the contract the system will determine if each party has held up their end and reward the worth of the agreement in credits.

Pilots can now forge trade agreements with other pilots. Use this system to formalize recurring trade contracts with pilots you trust. Both parties receive bonus credits for fulfilling their end of the deal.

Station Administration Interface

The station admin interface also allows players to transfer complete ownership of an asteroid base to another player. (Just make sure you’re paid properly for it first)

A new interface has been added to the PDA allowing pilots to upgrade their stations, and perform other administrative duties relating to their asteroid claims.

Micro Jumping

In an effort to speed up the game loop, we’ve enabled the ability for pilots to point jump anywhere in the sector (Default J Key). This is very experimental and it goes without saying that performing a point jump in the middle of a damn asteroid field is a terrible idea. However, we feel this will solve a long standing problem with the dullness of space travel and make the overall game a little more engaging. We’ll be monitoring the effects of this mechanic and making adjustments over time.

Rank Month

Every three months players have the opportunity to go up in rank. Starting from Cadet and ending with Admiral. Rank months will be going away in the next update and replaced with Commendations. (Explained below).

Introducing BugSplatTM – Our New Crash Reporter

We now use BugSplat to keep track of crash reports. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t report yours to the Forums or even Discord.

New Community Manager

Please take a moment to check in with Corey Dixson — our Official Community Manager. He’s here to help take in Bug Reports, Spread Fake News, and be a shoulder to cry on.

Corey hails from Montana, worked with us on the iOS Version of Epic Space, and has been with us mainly from the beginning as a contractor.

Now, he’s our latest Community Manager, and does waaaay more than just relay news.

Community Content

Thankfully, we’ve received a bit of community generated content, so here’s a shout out to Vega for his Short Look at Epic Space: Online.

Yeah that’s great and all, but what’s changing?

Rank Month was a good idea, but it looks like that’ll be going to the way side. In its way: Commendations.

Commendations are a new in game item that are used to attain Rank in game. Players can only earn commendations from PVP and special events. This new in game item will be used to motivate players to compete in the new “War Games” game mode. War Games is a new 5v5 match making game mode that allows players to get into the action quicker, and will be a system built right on top of the primary Epic Space: Online Universe.

Commendations can also be found in ship wreckage in the main game mode, but pilots will always have a chance to earn greater amounts of commendations in the War Games game mode.
