Dutch Invade Area 51. Promptly Arrested.

Two Dutch Nationals Wanted “A Closer Look” at Them Aliens. Now They’re in Jail.

U.S. military officials arrested Dutch nationals Ties Granzier, 20, and Govert Charles Wilhelmus Jacob Sweep, 21 on but not before they were about three miles into the site. The incursion happened last Tuesday, September 10th, a bit early for the joke/not-joke that is the Facebook “Storm Area 51: They Can’t Stop All of Us” event planned for this Friday. Reports have varied over the week as to whether or not the event would even take place. However, that variance happened over confusion between the Facebook event and the very real “Alienstock,” which sprang up in response and has since been moved to Las Vegas.

Gnashing @ Alienstock” is a festival of all things extraterrestrial planned for this weekend in Rachel, NV that is set to feature live music and a replica of the Area 51 gate. The festival promoters insist that they have no intention of actually storming the top-secret military site, and encourage participants to refrain from doing so.

Granzier and Sweep just couldn’t wait, though.

A Minor Incursion

I know, this piece is already teetering on the edge of hyperbole with the headline and all, but let’s be clear. A foreign national breaking into a top-secret U.S. Military installation is an incursion. Period. Luckily for the Granzier and Sweep, the guards at Area 51 are not quite as trigger happy as some other police around the country. I mean, this could have ended so much worse for these two. They could have been shot. They could have had bags put over their heads, been shipped to Guantanamo—never to be heard from again. Instead, they were simply arrested. After which, they pled guilty to trespassing and illegal parking. A veritable slap on the wrist, comparatively.

Still, the judge in the case did sentence the men to a year in jail, which was suspended. They will only face three days in jail, provided they each pay a fine of $2280. Nye County District Attorney Chris Arabia said, “It was important to us that these men serve jail time and pay a substantial financial penalty. We take this crime seriously. And people need to understand that we will not put up with this kind of nonsense.”

Granzier and Sweep are Youtubers and say they just wanted a closer look at the site before returning to the Netherlands. They were found with a supply of camera equipment and a drone. In addition to their fines and jail time, all of the electronic equipment officials confiscated must be surrendered.

Will “Storm Area 51” Happen?

Who knows. Area residents are preparing for the worst. People are planning on going to Alienstock, so one way or the other, the towns of Rachel and Hiko will see an influx of people. Whether or not the towns can handle that remains to be seen. It’s a huge opportunity for the town to capitalize on a phenomenon. At the same time, it’s a potential humanitarian crisis. My unsolicited advice for those who are planning on going to Nevada this weekend is this: Enjoy yourselves. Have some fun. Listen to some music. Buy an alien snow globe. But don’t be an idiot. A-10 Warthogs and M-4 rifles are no joke.
