Danny Trejo Really Wants To Do “Machete Kills in Space!”

Everyone’s Go-To Latino-Thug Character Actor Would Even Direct Machete Kills in Space Himself.

Let’s be clear right off the bat. That title was meant in no way to disrespect Mr. Trejo. He literally is the go-to guy in Hollywood when casting directors need someone to play a Latino gangster, hired-gun, or just all-around thug. I didn’t invent typecasting, so don’t blame me. Regardless, Danny Trejo is 75 now. I’m 41. If I wanted to live even half the life he’s led before I’m his age, I’d have to go to prison for a while, learn to box, and appear in half-a-billion movies/TV shows – at the very least. And I’ve had a pretty bitchin’ life so far. Still, even at 75, Trejo isn’t done with his career. My favorite onscreen badass isn’t showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon, either. He’s already starred in two hit movies based on the legendary character “Machete.” Now Mr. Trejo wants to do a third installment, Machete Kills in Space. In fact, he wants to do it so badly he said he would even be willing to direct it himself.

The Machete Phenomenon

The whole thing started with The Grindhouse Movies: Death Proof and Planet Terror (Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, respectively). The buddy directors decided to release their 70s-grindhouse-style gore fests together as a double feature. During the initial theatrical run, a trailer ran for a fictional movie called Machete that starred Danny Trejo.

Long story short: The trailer became so popular, that Rodriguez and the studio decided to make Machete for real. It was a hit. So much so that they made a sequel (see the trailer above) called Machete Kills.

In an interview with Syfywire, Trejo said he really wants to do a third installment, because the other two did so well. “Yeah, you know what, everybody in the world wants that,” he said. Then he remarked about how Rodriguez and the studios are dragging their feet. Ultimately he said that if the project doesn’t get moving soon he’ll just write and direct it himself. And given Trejo’s track record for making his life what he wants it, I wouldn’t put it past him.

If you haven’t yet, do yourself a favor and read up on Mr. Trejo. Even if you only know him as the “Mexi-CAN” from Rodriguez’s Once Upon a Time in Mexico, or if you only know him as the Columbian thug from the Vin Diesel masterpiece, XXX, you’ll be surprised at the amazing life he’s led.
