Celebrating The ISS Anniversary On Twitter

The First ISS Crew Launched Nineteen Years Ago. People Around the Twitterverse Cheer the Accomplishment and Are Already Getting Ready for Next Year’s Big ISS Anniversary.

On Halloween of 2000, the first long-term crew of the International Space Station (ISS) blasted off. Their destination remains one of humanity’s finest achievements, and tomorrow marks the nineteenth anniversary of their arrival. To mark the occasion, Twitter is trending with thoughts about the ISS anniversary. We have five favorites lined up for you!

Two things about this one stand out. The fist is the idea that nobody that is traditional high school age or younger has ever lived without a living human presence in space. In fact, that in itself is a testament to the ISS’s significance. Second, the fact that the hashtag #SpaceStation20th is attached is a little odd, considering this is only the nineteenth anniversary. I guess it’s never too early to start celebrating, though.

Now #AskNASA is a much more appropriate hashtag. As such, NASA Officials will be answering questions about the ISS anniversary, its mission, and plans for the future.

Of course, they’ll also be seeing questions like this:

While that idea is neat, I think the only way we could really make that happen would be if McConaughey were nowhere near it. Still, if questions like that don’t get asked, we may never reach interstellar space.

Most people can’t travel to a different country, or even a state on the other side of our own country, without some kind of change in perspective. One imagines that leaving the planet entirely provides a wholely unique perspective on our fragile planet, and us as people. This awesome video provides some insight into what it’s like to see the earth from the ISS.

Happy Halloween from Space

Yep. Even astronauts get to dress up for Halloween! My personal favorites from this tweet are Vader and Wolverene.

Happy nineteenth, ISS! Your contribution to humanity will never truly be quantified, though it’s there in all of us if we only look up to the stars and remember that there’s always someone up there for us.
