Another Successful SpaceX Falcon 9 Launch and Landing

Elon Musk’s Dream of Reusing SpaceX Falcon 9 Rockets is Becoming Reality. Now Let’s See If The Low-Cost Promises Will, Too.

Yesterday Elon Musk’s space-tech firm launched a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket into space and nailed the landing. Again. Despite the public spectacle that happens whenever there’s a setback or failure on another project, the SpaceX Falcon 9 proves reliable as ever. The Falcon 9 isn’t SpaceX’s final destination in rocketry, though. They do sell a lot more Falcon 9 trips than they do for the Falcon Heavy—the company’s much larger capacity rocket system. However, Musk eventually envisions more efficient rockets for every type of mission. In order to make that vision a reality, they have to master the reusability of these rockets.

Monday’s launch was the 13th mission of 2019 for SpaceX. For this specific Falcon 9, the trip represents its sophomore year, so to speak. This is the second time it’s been to space. It’s not the only time SpaceX has reused a Falcon 9, though. Over the last two years, they’ve nailed pad landings and stage recovery to the point where some Falcon 9s have been used three times or more.

The Payload

This particular mission carried with it commercial communications satellites, though not SpaceX’s own Starlink satellites. This satellite system was for a Singapore-based startup—Kacific Broadband Satellites—that works with a Japanese broadband provider, Sky Perfect JSAT. The new satellite will bring affordable broadband internet services to myriad underserved communities in the South Pacific. Those rural island communities mostly rely on Ku-band satellites for internet service, which is sketchy and unreliable at best. According to a Kacific official, the hardware (tablets, smartphones, etc) is widely available in these communities, but the infrastructure isn’t. With this launch, they hope to change that.
