Another All-Female Spacewalk Tomorrow!

After Making History in October with the First All-Female Spacewalk, Christina Koch and Jessica Meir are Ready to Head out into the Black Again Tomorrow.

According to a tweet from astronaut Jessica Meir, she and fellow astronaut Christina Koch are preparing for another all-female spacewalk. As a matter of fact, the spacewalk is scheduled for tomorrow morning (January 15th) at 6:50 am EST.

Here’s Meir’s tweet:

About Women Walking in Space

Neither Koch nor Meir can claim the title of the first woman to perform a spacewalk (or EVA, as they’re sometimes called). That honor belongs to a Russian cosmonaut named Svetlana Savitskaya. In fact, Savitskaya became the second woman in space in 1982 and the first to do an EVA in 1984. Back then Koch (40) and Meir (42) (and I—41) were just kids watching space shuttle launches on television.

Since the 1980s, then, women have been participating in EVAs. However, October 2019 saw the first all-female spacewalk. The October mission served to replace batteries and perform other maintenance tasks, but it also served as a symbol for gender equality. In a very clear statement, Koch and Meir’s first EVA said, “No thanks, guys. We got this.” And they did.

Tomorrow’s Mission

During their EVA tomorrow, Meir and Koch will also replace batteries. They’ll swap the old nickel-hydrogen batteries on the Port-6 truss structure with more powerful and newer lithium-ion batteries. NASA will be streaming the event live, and we’ll post coverage of it as well.
